Welcome to Cheatsheets Project for Critical Thinking!
Thank you for your interest in participating in focus group discussions for a study titled “The Effectiveness of Cheat-sheets as a Learning Tool for Critical Thinking”. You are invited to participate in this focus group discussion because you have previously taken and/or are currently taking Dr. Lee-An’s lower-level sociology class and have experience creating a hand-written cheat-sheet to prepare for your sit-in exams. Dr. Jiyoung Lee-An (Assistant Teaching Professor, Sociology, TRU) is the main investigator of this research. Please read the information on this website before deciding whether or not to take part in this project. If you decide to participate, thank you. If you decide not to participate, thank you for considering this request.
What is this study about?
The purpose of this study is to examine the effectiveness of handwritten cheat-sheets as a tool for critical thinking and to develop a variety of cheat-sheet templates. This workshop aims to develop a variety of cheat-sheet templates for students with different learning styles.
Who are the researchers?
Dr. Jiyoung Lee-An
I am an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Environment, Culture & Society at TRU. As a critical race feminist sociologist and interdisciplinary scholar, my teaching interests focus on migration, feminism, critical race theories, transnationalism, activism, social justice, decolonial feminist theories, critical multiculturalism, Canadian Studies, Korean studies, and comparative studies.
In my lower-year sociology classes, I encourage students to develop critical thinking and use ‘cheat sheets’ as an educational tool to meaningfully engage with course learning materials, instead of simply spending time on rote memorization of course content. I am excited to hear about the experiences of students and develop an effective teaching technology for critical thinking through this cheat sheet research project. Join our research!
Pryia Gill
I am a third year sociology student at Thompson Rivers University. I gained interest in this topic as I am a former student of Dr.Jiyoung and have used cheat sheets in examinations. When presented with this opportunity I was interested in what ways cheat sheets can be made most effective and help one engage in critical thinking by exploring different learning styles and methods of creation.
